Ransomes Sports are away to fellow SIL Senior Division outfit Wickham Market this weekend (12th Nov) in the 2nd round of the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup K.O 1.30 pm. This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this calender year with Ransomes yet to taste defeat.
Ransomes are unbeaten this season, but how good they are at the moment is anyone's guess. They have this weird inability to play in the first half which was evident in their last match up with Wickham Market, but they appear to have their early season attacking gusto back now, and they got the balance right on a raucous occasion last weekend at Sidegate Avenue against Claydon. They gave a far better performance in the 5-0 demolition of Claydon, and there was little evidence of the dislocation between midfield and the forward line that had haunted Ransomes in that previous Wickham Market encounter.
Ransomes won that league match 2-1, but the Marketmen will feel they should have taken something off their hosts that day - it may have been a perceived injustice, with Wickham Market now looking to go one better on their home patch - their chances of achieving a result will have increased a notch because of the home draw.
There is a greater resilence and character about Wickham Market these days, they certainly impressed the Sidegate Avenue faithful in the league encounter last month. It will be hard for Ransomes, but then again it always is as Wickham Market are no pushovers. They are well organised and play to their abilities.
There has been a gradual improvement as their season has progressed. Their last six games have brought four wins and just two defeats, with one clean sheet, but if Ransomes can dominate possession and shot count as they did against Claydon, then they could crack open a stubborn opponent.
There is still plenty of work to do at Wickham Market with their immediate target being to enjoy a good cup run - but facing Ransomes is likely to be unhelpful. Wickham are lacking a focal point somewhat, and they will need to brush up on their finishing - it cost them previously against Ransomes - but they have the potential to be really dangerous.
It should be a spicy encounter which has been lent added piquancy by a place in the quarter finals and a step nearer to a potential appearance at Portman Road.
