Rebels AFC 9.7 defeat Hawks 6.11

It was a rare sunny & dry game for the Rebels as they faced off against the reigning Premiers Broadview Hawks. Not only did the Rebs have some revenge on their minds from last season’s premature ouster at the hands of the Hawk, this was a must win to keep their hopes of playing in September alive. This was one the boys in black and white were pumped for.

The first quarter started slow for the Rebs with some bad early 50’s and the Hawks up and about early. However the Rebs quickly put a horrible start behind them and switched on for the final 10 minutes. The Racoons mids lead by Baden, Brownie and Jayden started to dominate the ground allowing the Rebs to finish the quarter with the lead.

The second quarter started much the same as the first ended. With Philthy “White Shadow” Wild dominating a tagging role the Rebs continued to shut down the Hawks dangerous players and control the ground. However as much pressure as the Rebs maintained the Hawks did not bend and didn’t concede a point all quarter. As the quarter continued on, the Hawks were able push back and started converting on their chances despite the Rebel efforts.

The third quarter was a gut check one for the Rebs, as they could either did deep and keep it close or fold under the Hawks championship swagger. It was the defenders taking the lead. In addition to Alex and Dre going hard, Captain Scuba shut down the Hawks biggest scoring threat, Bull played the GK role to perfection, Brian following suit with a near perfect DA role and Screech coming through with his best game of the season. The Rebs shut door allowing the Hawks only one shot on goal for a single behind. With the Hawks offence negated the mids continued to pump the ball forward. Kid, as he did all game, was taking marks at will at the top of the 50 and Big Mike lived up to his name with 2 big goals in the quarter to ensure the Rebs went into the final frame with the lead.
Hawks 4-9- 33 Rebels 6-6- 42

Fourth quarter let downs have plagued the Rebels all season long and everyone knew the Hawks would not be rolling over. So tension was high leading into the fourth. It was de-ja-vu early on as the Hawks scored early and had all the early momentum putting the Rebs on their back heels. However once again the racoons in the middle took control and pumped it deep where veteran leadership prevailed. Michael “will never retire again” Fabbri took control of the game with 2 clutch goals in the quarter giving him 4 for the match. The Rebs even got the unexpected offence from Bruce “Sniper” Pollock with his first career goal. The final horn sounded and the Rebs sang the song.

Final - Hawks 6-11- 47 Rebels 9-7- 61
