BRITTLE BATTING COSTS RENFREW DEAR!!

Just when it seemed that things couldn’t get any worse, they did, as Renfrew’s batsmen capitulated once again in their WDCU First Division match with Drumpellier, at The Deanpark Oval on Saturday (3rd June).
Unsurprisingly, on a damp and cloudy day that would only be helpful to bowlers, the visitors captain, Gordon Shaw, won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the Royal Burgh side to bat first.
This brought early rewards for the visitors and set the tone for the innings as both Renfrew openers, Irfan Nawaz and Mahmood Alam, departed within the space of seven balls and inside seven overs.
Amrit Kalash battled hard for twenty overs and top scored for the home side with 22 but when he was the seventh man out with only 55 runs on the board, then things looked bleak.
Waqas Arshad added a quick fire 13 to the total and was the only other batsman to reach double figures in the innings as the home side were dismissed for just 78 in 31 overs.
As might be expected, the visitors bowling figures were impressive with Mohsin Khan (4 for 17), William Leslie (3 for 16) Darren Pryde (2 for 20) and Joshua Pryde (1 for 19), sharing the spoils.
In reply, Drumpellier reached their target from 16.5 overs but did suffer a couple of casualties along the way.
Openers Hayden Sweet and Zeeshan Aziz posted an opening stand of 39 for the first wicket before Sweet was caught by Renfrew skipper Shabir Baig from the bowling of Mahmood Alam for 21, in the tenth over.
Aziz followed 18 runs later for 15, when he offered a catch to Amrit Kalash, to give Mahmood Alam his second wicket.
Unfortunately, there was to be no further break through and William Leslie (15 not out) and Zander Erasmus (18 not out) saw the visitors safely to their target and an eight-wicket victory.
Mahmood Alam finished with 2 wickets for 18 runs but all in all this was a deeply disappointing performance from the home side.
They will be looking to get back on track next Saturday when they travel to New Williamfield to take on third placed Stirling County.
