Five tries and a defensive shut out at Chevinedge

Another strong defensive performance from Siddal was the foundations for two more NCL points against a resolute York Acorn on Saturday.

Siddal started well, playing some free flowing rugby as the ball passed through hands at speed. Conner MacCallum scored a try after 4 minutes when he found a gap in the Acorn defence to run in from 20 yards. The home side scored a well worked try five minutes later on the back of another MacCallum break. The second rower passed to the supporting Henry Turner and he fed the ball inside to Jamie Greenwood who in turn found Christian Ackroyd to leave the half back scampering over the line. Lewis Hosty was successful with both conversions to put Siddal 12-0 ahead inside the opening ten minutes.

A penalty for Acorn led to the visitors applying a spell of pressure on Siddal's defence. Nathan Welsh, Lewis Lord and Alfie Crawford were all showing well for Acorn but a great tackle from Hosty on the goal line prevented a try after 13 minutes. Josh Milnes, Danny Williams and Danny Rushworth put in their usual shift in defence and skipper Canaan Smithies once again led from the front.

Siddal continued to show an adventurous approach in attack but the York defence did well to prevent firstly Liam Whitton and from the next play Oli Lewis, from scoring as the ball was moved from one side of the pitch to the other at the half way point of the opening period.

The home team's interchanges kept the momentum going as Harry Georgiou, Keenan Ramsden, Dan May and Dom Booth were all straight into the action to test Acorn's resolve. The York team held firm and once again moved play upfield. Another try saving tackle, this time from May, kept Acorn out and Oli Lewis, Whitton and Hosty all took testing high balls from the boot of Acorn's stand off Antony Chilton before the half time whistle.

On the stroke of half time, Georgiou and Booth exchanged passes as the two forwards split the Acorn defence to leave Georgiou to score by the side of the posts. Hosty's conversion put Siddal 18-0 ahead.

As the sides came out for the second half Siddal kept probing for a try with Harry Milnes, Smithies and Sam Walsh looking for openings.

The lead was stretched on 58 minutes after Chilton hit another last tackle high ball. Acorn tried to keep the ball alive but a loose pass was picked up by alert man-of-the-match Jamie Greenwood and his quick thinking found Hosty, allowing the speedy full back to race 60 yards upfield to score under the posts. He converted his own try for a 24-0 lead.

The final score came ten minutes from the end of the game, when Greenwood's short kick was pounced on by Booth who touched down in the corner despite the presence of two defenders. Hosty's touchline conversion brought the score to 30-0.

Siddal missed a couple more try scoring opportunities as the final pass went begging, but this was another encouraging display against a useful York side who showed they will be tough opponents when the fixture is reversed later in the season.
