The Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Section is one of 13 sporting sections that belong to the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC). The SCC is Singapore’s premier sports and social club - established in 1852, it is also the oldest and housed in a colonial building steeped with charm and tradition and conveniently located in the heart of Singapore.

Rugby was established in Singapore in the 1880s and the SCC Rugby Section have been at the forefront of rugby development in Singapore ever since. We are one of the largest and oldest rugby clubs in Singapore, if not Asia, and also one of the most successful, having won the national championship and other prestigious international competitions on many occasions.SCC Rugby

The Rugby Section fields five teams – the 1st XV which competes in the National Premiership, a 2nd XV (called the Tankards XV) which competes in the National Division 1, a 3rd XV which competes in the National Division 2, a Colts XV and a social XV (called the Nomads XV) which is a mixture of all the regular playing members of the Section. Finally, making up the complete Section, is the SCC Touring Side which, as its name suggests, represents the SCC Rugby Section on tours overseas, whether it be XVs, 7s or even 10s, and plays in some of the most prestigious competitions (in some of the most exotic locations) on the Asian Rugby circuit. The SCC is the most active touring rugby club in Singapore – the SCC has established annual reciprocal fixtures with the International Sports Club of Indonesia, the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It also tours to Australia, Bali, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Pattaya, Vietnam and even South Africa.

On the pitch we take our rugby seriously - our 1st XV is one of the strongest sides in Singapore fielding many current Singapore national team players and other players with former international representative caps. We have also won the Division 1 and Division 2 titles on many occasions. Indeed, as a testament to our strength in depth we have won the Division 2 title 3 years in succession. We have a dedicated and professionally qualified coach, team managers who look after the off-the-field organization of the team and a team physio. However we also place a strong emphasis on the social side of rugby. Our games are often the most heavily spectated and supported in Singapore and there are regular social events organized by our own Social Secretary. In addition to our own club we often congregate weekly (sometimes more, to the consternation of our coaching and fitness staff!) at designated nightspots to party the night away.

Another distinguishing feature of our club is that we are unique in having our own facilities and pitch. Our pitch, called the Padang (the Malay word for “field”), is the best known and most immaculately groomed playing surface in Singapore, if not Asia. The backdrop from the pitch is simply breathtaking. We are conveniently located in the heart of the business district and centre of the old government administrative district of Singapore at Connaught Road – which makes transportation to training and to/from games a breeze. When we play away from home we arrange bus transportation to and from the away location.

The rugby season in Singapore is short and starts in July and ends in November. However, we are unique among rugby clubs in Singapore in having an active fixture list throughout the year to supplement the regular season. We are often the first port of call for visiting teams coming to Singapore from all over the world, as well as our regular visiting teams from Asia. In addition we have strong ties with the Australian Navy, British Royal Navy, US Navy and New Zealand Navy and schedule regular matches against ships from those fleets when they pass through Singapore. And of course there is our own competition, the SCC 7s, the major event in the Singapore rugby diary, which attracts world class players from all over the globe. All this serves to create what no other rugby club in Singapore can offer – a year round diet of competitive and social rugby.

We welcome all players to the SCC Rugby Section and we encourage anyone who is interested in joining us to come down to training and meet the existing members of the club. Our players come from all walks of life, all nationalities and all ages. Our players currently represent the United Nations of the rugby community in Singapore as we have players from Australia, Canada, England, France, Ireland, Malaysia, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Thailand, the USA and Wales as well as our local Singapore players. Indeed our Touring Side that recently won a trophy in the Pattaya International 10s was made up of more than 7 nationalities! And we have a key player who is still active even at the age of 55 – as well as occasionally fielding a Veterans XV!!

We look forward to welcoming you to the SCC Rugby Section and invite you to share the friendship, camaraderie and hospitality that make us the best rugby club in Singapore.
