A great game to watch with a 10 try bonanza!

Southam pack started this friendly match under pressure from a bigger
Daventry pack and things looked dodgy for the first 10 minutes as Daventry's dominance resulted in an easy wingers try. Southam rallied well and won some ball to keep them in Dav's 22, resulting in a try for Tom Wright fed from a blindside break from a scrum by No8, Will Lyne. After soaking up the pressure on their own 10, another blindside break by Lyne resulted in a 50m try for Wright with a fine step to beat the Daventry cover. With some good lineout ball supplied by Dan Kimberly and James Ashby, Southam continued to dominate and scored again from a diagonal cutback by centre Mike Mudd, slicing through the Daventry defence and feeding the rapid supporting prop, Gaz Royans for a well taken try. Next, some quick thinking by Captain Pete Burnell with a quick 22 and support from winger Kiron Phillips allowed a 70m try to be finished off by Mudd. From the kick off Lyne crafted a mazy 50m run using the Southam support as foils and eventually found Phillips for a neat try with Grindal converting. Daventry reverted to 9 man Rugby and forced numerous penalties from a retreating Southam, until the Daventry No8 broke through for a try. Southam quickly responded again and with all the Daventry backs up, fly half Harry Hewson dropped a well judged ball behind, allowing centre Burnell an easy touch down for 5 more points with Grindal converting. The half finished with Southam in control 36 - 10.

In the 2nd half, Southam had first strike with a fine interception try
by Captain Burnell, Daventry then came back and mauled Southam down the field and eventually forced the try. Daventry's pressure continued from the kick and using the superior weight forced Southam in to 5 minutes continous defence before yielding to a Daventry score wide out. Southam responded by stealing the ball from Daventry and a wide high bouncing cross kick from Hewson allowed centre Mudd to get his 2nd try, with Grindal converting. Southam kept up the pressure with an inteception from wing forward Ashby, who fed Hewson for a try near the posts, Grindal again converting. With Daventry flagging a quick lineout straight to Burnell, who spread the ball, allowed Hewson to split
the Daventry backs and complete a fine afternoon for Southam.

Man of the Match - James Ashby

By the number of people scoring two tries and no more, a few of the crowd were thinking of jug evasion, but as it was over 50 points, Pete bought the Captains jug for a well happy team.
