Saints ended their league campaign for the year with a workmanlike performance in a match that failed to scale the heights coach Richard Lamb usually expects.
With conditions freezing cold the ball was dropped more times than usual and the game was always a stop-start affair. Before the match skipper Adam Kellow was told he had been awarded the Daily Telegraph Junior Clubs Player of the Month award and for the first half an hour of the game the players seemed to be thinking of the prize which is a training session for the whole team at either Bath or Gloucester. It was only 10 minutes before the break that Saints troubled the scorers, play before that was forgettable with Saints having the better of things but Old Plymouthians looking dangerous out wide. From a lineout close to the line St Austell were stopped just short and when the ball was recycled prop Jonathan Gibbons took the ball at pace to crash over the line to give Saints a 5-0 lead and that's how it stayed until half time.
The second half was slightly better and when Saints squandered an overlap with the try line wide open the ref pulled play back and awarded Saints a penalty 30 yards out and centre Ashwin converted to put Saints 8-0 up.
St Austell relaxed and played their best rugby for the last quarter of the match with man of the match Jack Grigg and centre Tate Richardson making good runs that deserved more, but it was the driving maul that was responsible for the next score from a lineout 5yards out the Saints pack drove over, flanker Rob Jeffs getting the final touch.
Old Plymouthians never gave up and maybe deserved a try for their efforts but it was fitting that the last try went to home skipper Adam Kellow when he broke a tackle on the blind side and dived over the last league try of 2009 to make the final score 18-0.
