Match report by Jack Rowe
The match only went ahead after a morning pitch inspection and Saints must have wished they had stayed at home. All was not doom and gloom as the young Saints side won enough possession to have won the match, they just need to learn how to turn it into points and defend when the opposition has the ball.
After repelling the opening attacks of the home backs St Austell started to get on top and with the forwards working well, the ball was released to centre James Martin who made good ground up the middle. However, when the ball was recycled it was knocked on and this pattern of losing possession in threatening positions continued throughout the game. The Saints who had the first chance to get points on the board when fly half Cavan Boyer pushed the ball wide from just inside the Okes half after they had been penalised for not rolling away.
It was the Saints turn to get on the wrong side of the ref and twice when going forward with the ball were penalised for not staying on their feet and the turning point came when they had a player sent to the sin bin for a tackling offence. While down to fourteen men Saints conceded two tries, the first from a catch and drive scored by Tom McGratton and the second from a poor clearance kick not helped by the Saints defence allowing players to run through them with barely a pat on the back with Tom Powell getting the touch down and adding the conversion leaving Saints 12-0 down. Even though the game was only 20 minutes old, Saints never looked like they would get back into it. When another Saints attack broke down the dangerous Okehampton backs ran the ball back to beat a virtually non-existent defence to score wide out and make it 17-0 and with the last kick of the half a penalty in front of the posts made the half time score line 20-0.
Saints improved in the second half and playing with the slope behind them finally spent some time in the home 22, but the well drilled Okes defence repelled all their efforts. In the scrums Saints had the upper hand but when they started losing their own throw in the lineout, Okehampton again broke out from deep in their own half and were only prevented scoring thanks to a last gasp tackle by full back Callum Wilson. This was short lived, as after a series of scrums and line outs St Austell were penalised and prop Pat Nash tapped and was driven over by the rest of his pack to make it 25-0 midway through the second half.
Play was even for the last twenty minutes when, as with the first half, Okehampton scored from the final play when a cross field kick allowed Matt Jones to give Okehampton a deserved if somewhat flattering 30-0 victory.
Saints young team showed they are capable of competing with the top teams but need to play for 80 minutes and not lose concentration. With the teams below them all winning, they need victory at home to Crediton on Saturday to keep their place in the calming waters of mid-table (KO 2:30pm).
