Town in danger of relegation

By

Denbigh Town 0-1 Buckley Town

This home defeat means Denbigh need two wins out of their last three games over the next fortnight to be avoid relegation.

Having beaten Buckley twice already this season in the league and cup Denbigh went into the game looking for the win to move away from the relegation zone. However it was a lack lustre performance in the first half from Denbigh that saw Buckley score the only goal through Shaun Tinsley with a shot that evaded the outstretched arms of Craig Vernon on 28 minutes

Denbigh welcomed Sam Downey back into the side after suspension. New signing from Brickfield young Harley Steel started on the bench.

On a warm spring afternoon, both sides found it difficult at times to control the ball on a hard pitch having been more used to playing on wet surfaces over the last few months. Denbigh had chances with Scott McHarrie putting in an excellent cross after some strong work down the right wing but no attacker was around to capitalise on his good work. Pat Hinchcliffe was proving a threat down the right wing and he battled hard all afternoon but Denbigh were being thwarted by Buckley’s well marshalled defenders and attempts on goal in the first half were limited

The second half was an improvement when Denbigh had more of the game but they found Buckley keeper Makaruk in fine form as he saved well first from Hinchcliffe and then minutes later from Lewis Sirrell’s great strike after more good work from Hinchcliffe.

Harley Steel came on for his debut midway through the second half and he impressed with some good footwork and telling passes. Billy Holmes joined the fray moments later and he put in some strong challenges as Denbigh stepped up their attack

As more and more pressure came on the Buckley goal Hinchcliffe had a screamer of a shot go just wide from 25 yards, and Tony Davies had a header well saved by Buckley’s man of the match Makaruk.

As time ran out even Denbigh’s keeper Craig Vernon joined the attack on two corners but it was’nt to be and Denbigh ran out losers

Joint manager Matty Jones said after the game “The second half performance was a huge improvement on the first, but not enough to earn anything out of the game”

It’s going to be a nail biting end of season time for the Town. Next up is a local derby away against Rhyl on Friday 4th April followed by home fixtures against Holywell Town and Llanrhaeadr YM the week after.
