Southam 18 - 0 Old Coventrians

By

This was a much better performance, than the reverse match in October. In this match Southam had dominance at the scrums and soaked up all the charges by the OCs big forwards.

It was windy day and Southam started well into the wind, with a secure defence and scrum dominance. 20 minutes in Southam got pssession on the OCs 22 from a knock on. The ball was recycled and spread, centre Tom Grimes crashed over the gain line and laid off to centre Will Clarke, Clarke looped outside and with a nice hand off, got behind the defence and then up the touchline to go over for the try. Southam made a mistake from the restart, resulting in a penalty and were grateful, when OCs missed in front of the posts. OCs tried to use forward drives to gain ground and the Southam forwards stood firm, with flanker James LLoyd going over the ball twice to gain penalties for holding on.
HT 5 - 0

With the wind, Southam struggled to control possesion and stay in OCs 22, but after 25 minutes, fly half Harry Hewson kicked Southam down to the OCs 5m, from a scrum 5 the Southam forwards drove repeatedly and forced the penalty, scrum half Will Grindal spread the ball and a miss pass from Grimes, found full back Toby Page, who gassed round the corner for the try, converted by Grindal. OCs came back from the restart, keeping it the forwards, but the Southam forwards soaked up the pressure and got the ball back and substitute centre Pete Burnell cleared it deep, a good kick chase by Clarke and a fumble by OCs, allowed to him scrag the full back and the supporting Hewson to get over the ball and force the penalty for not releasing on the OCs 10m, converted by Grindal. OCs had been penalised for mouth all through the match and from yet another mouth penalty, Grindal kicked down to the OCs 22, from the lineout LLoyd crashed through and gained another penalty for not rolling and Grindal converted,
FT 18 - 0

This was game where OCs had long periods of possesion for the forward drives and the Southam pack did a lot of tackling and denied OCs even a point. Combined with a steady scrum and lineouts the Southam forwards had a good day.
