A message from your DoR:
Today Lakenham kicked off 2019 by hosting mid-table Beccles. Both teams have had their difficulties this year however both were bolstered by the generosity of Lowestoft and Yarmouth, Fakenham, Broadland and Southwold agreeing to help out. There was even a last minute appearence from our overseas player Martin 'Rev' Revell.
The first twenty minutes proved to be very attritional with both defences thwarting the attacking side. It was fair to say that Lakenham's forwards had a poor first quarter often leaving the ball carrier isolated and giving away numerous turnovers and penalties. To compound the unforced errors Beccles opened the scoring with one of their almighty big forwards running through 4-5 lakenham tackles to touchdown.
This seemed to spring Lakenham into life and they started to put together some good phases and gain yardage, finally after intense pressure Graham Cook spun out of a couple of tackles to score. This really had a positive effect on Lakenham and the forwards started to get involved in the game with strong carries from the likely suspects of Barber, Damo and Warren along with the biggest fly half of all time Dorian Squires getting into the mix. The second try was magical 'it sounds corny but you shouldve seen it' Michael Barber weaving in and out of the Beccles defence to score from the halfway line to put Lakenham 14-5 ahead at half time.
The start of the second half definitely did not go to plan for Lakenham, failure to deal with a tap penalty resulted in Beccles cutting the gap to 4 points. The following phases of play is testament to the spirit of the team we had today, their heads stayed up and they continued to fight to assert their dominance, the scrum was working well and the lineout was functioning superbly, we just needed another try to settle the nerves!!!
As the game reached the 3rd quarter Lakenham really hit their purple patch, with Overseas Martin Revell scoring two fantastic tries out on the wing, having a big 6ft 4in bloke with a dirty beard running at you isnt a pleasant experience!!! Michael Barber managed to complete his hattrick with two further fantastic finishes, and now Lakenham were in control!! Even Dan Baker managed to drive through 3 players for his first try of the season.
The special mention must go to our special Northerner Damo, we think he comes from Bradford... However Bradford have decided to disown him following possibly the most butchered try attempt Hilltops has ever seen!! Dorian Squires bursting through the tackles, offloading to Damo who crossed the tryline only to drop it
WHAT A TWAT!
The drama was not over however!!! With 2 minutes left Andy Leech entered the pitch to speak to the referee (we were all confused!!!) Only to announce one of the boys missus was about to give birth!! It turned out to be a false alarm as the kid didnt pop out and he wasnt the father anyway!!
Final Score
Lakenham 43- 10 Beccles
Thats all for now
