Reds progress after a dominant second half

Reds progress after a dominant second half

Charlie Bright7 Dec 2016 - 18:05

Redhill produced a strong second half to beat Balham and book a place in the last four.

The reds progressed to the Semi Finall of the RPM Divison One Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

Gavin Gordon named a strong side for the tie with new signing Kieran Campbell making his home debut, there was also a debut for for Fabio Nunes who started at left back.

It was an indication of the respect the manager had for the visitors Balham, who have been on a good league run themselves.

It was a great start for the Lobsters, who started brightly. New man Kieran Campbell tried his luck from a dead ball situation from around 25 yards. His effort caused problems for the Balham keeper, who could only parry into the path of Abi Bolagi, and the skipper slotted home for his first of the season.

The reds settled down into a rhythm after the early goal, Marlon Pinder and Kery Kedze posing Balham problems down the flanks. Balham though looked dangerous, and the Cup tie was far from over. On 26 minutes the away side had a leveller after some good play, the latter stages of the first half were evenly contested with both sides looking to find another goal going into the interval.

The Lobsters had an even faster start to the second half, thanks to Marlon Pinder. From the kick off Pinder embarked on a mazy run into the Balham half, playing a one, two with Sam Marks he ran into the box and cooly slid home to regain the Reds lead. Balham seemed rattled and Redhill took their chance, taking the game by the scruff of the neck. They hunted Balham down, winning the ball back quickly and starting new attacks.

The third goal finally came on 62 minutes, Ashley Snadden so influential to the reds play scoring his third of the season, he picked the ball up on the edge of the box before rifling home. It was fully deserved and meant Redhill were in touching distance of the last four!

The tie was all but sealed with twenty minutes to play, new man Kieran Campbell had worked his socks off, and deserved his goal, smashing in the reds fourth and his fourth in two games for his new club. The game wasn't quite safe though, especially with this Balham team. They cut the deficit with fifteen to play, Vokaty not claiming the ball, and Goodband at the back post to tap home to make it 4-2.

The ever so reliable Vokaty made amends for his slight error, to make a smart stop as the away side sensed a late fight back. The Reds defended solidly at the death to snuff out any danger. Near the end saw Aiden Cawte, Lee Stripp and Tony Halsey get some much needed game time, as they look to push for a start at the weekend. The final whistle blew and Redhill had booked a place in the last four, it was a thoroughly dominant second half and good win.

Ash United are the visitors this Saturday as they look to end the Lobsters six match unbeaten league run - make sure you don't miss out!
