West Park Colts make County Cup progress

York Colts 0 v West Park Colts 22

West Park Bramhope Colts travelled to York knowing that they would have to be at their very best to defeat a strong York side and progress to the semi-final. Having disposed of Otley in the previous round York were in determined mood and started the game strongly dominating possession during the first quarter.

However, their desire to kick the ball rather then run it backfired as Park soaked up the early pressure. Park's forwards gradually managed to secure some good ball to enable their backs to come into the game. Fly-half Simon Lewis scored a great individual try as he kicked deep and pressured the York full-back into spilling the ball close to his line for Lewis to claim the try. Lewis narrowly failed with the conversion.

Park's second try came as centre Nick Holdsworth dummied his way over from out wide and outpaced the York defence to go over. Holdsworth failed with the conversion and Park went into the half-time break with a 10-0 lead.

York started the second-half strongly and again Park had to absorb the early pressure. As with the first-half Park's strong defence kept York out and Park eventually took complete control of the game. A fine break down the left hand side by Park's backs led to the best try of the game as the ball went through several hands before scrum-half Jack Bickerdike went over for the try. Again the conversion went wide.

Park secured the game with ten minutes to go when their pack secured good ball for it to be moved out wide for full-back Robert Lockery to go over unopposed. This was a fine performance by all the West Park team who now progress to meet either Hull Ionians or Sheffield in the semi-final. l This weekend Park take a well-earned break going on tour to Holland to try and retain the title they won last year as Dutch National Youth tournament winners.
