Championship side Coventry have embarked on building their academy programme with the introduction of an under 18s side lead by Coventry's RFC Captain Phil Boulton. Open trials and subsequent training sessions at the Butts Park Arena resulted in a squad of 30 being selected from across the midlands.
Eight Old Leamingtonians Colts were successful in being invited to be part of their new set up and five securing a place in the first match held against Nottingham Academy at Long Eaton RFC on Sunday.
A close fought game with Coventry ending the stronger side but unable to overcome Nottinghams lead losing out by three points 19-22. The five Old Leamingtonians played very well, released from club duties and represented the club demonstrating the strength and depth in our clubs Colts team who were victorious on Saturday beating Old Nothamptonians 7-0. With three more playings returning from injury and pushing for selection an exciting future beckons for all sections at the Crofts.
The Coventry Academy will be run alongside Club and Warwickshire County Rugby programmes, this will provide not only a great opportunity to a rugby pathway but also receive training from Championship coaching staff and players.
