St Marys Church was bursting at the seams on Friday afternoon when hundreds of mourners came to pay their respects and say goodbye to Danny. It was literally standing room only with all the pews, choir stalls and other seats taken well before the service started.
A wonderful fitting tribute from the grandchildren was read beautifully by Emily Irvine, whilst Norman Marler spoke with emotion about Danny’s life, telling stories of his exploits in the Navy and also many “rugby” tales especially of how he use to trawl the town on a Saturday morning to get a team together.
A period of reflection in true naval tradition started with a Royal Marines Bugler playing Last Post and finishing with Reveille .The service was followed by a private burial at St Marys Churchyard attended by close friends and relatives.
It was great to see so many youth, colts, current and former senior players pay their respects to a man that influenced their rugby lives. Also represented were current and former members and committee members of BRFC, English, South West and Devon Rugby, the Referees Association, Royal Naval Association plus many friends from the other associations and connections that he had involvements with.
The wake was held at the club were again hundreds paid tribute to “Mr Brixham” and packed both bars. A toast was raised by all in the club with “Danny’s cup of tea”.....whisky and lemonade. A secret he kept from Anne for years until recently when she found out this tea was not really PG Tips!!
Please remember Anne, Sean, James and families in your thoughts and prayers.
God Bless Danny ...and thank you from all of us.
