FIRST FIFTH TEAM OUTING 21.12.1985

BUCKINGHAM 5THS 20 - 0 WHEATLEY 3RDS

Organised by the late Richard Smith (smithy) it was decided to run a fifth team on an annual basis. It was difficult to get into the bishops or veteran teams in those days. We should have played Ampthill 5ths but they cried off.

After a fancy dress party at the club the day before we turned up at the white hart for pre-match drinks. This was after selling rugby club Christmas raffle tickets outside the national Westminster bank.

We played at the Buckingham university pitch off the Bourton road (changed in the first team changing rooms which upset tiger).

A lot of players did come out of retirement my diary states the following names:

Dave (shaft) Holdem; Neville Hettersley; Anthony flack; Richard smith; David Spicer; Ron jell; paul & stephen wheeler; james & guy smith; john redshaw; richard field; james morgan; john housden; michael cook; chris foscott and steve (bonesy) jones.

As the opposition only turned up with 8 players we also lent them david whitehead; bernie garbe; martin crowley; kevin senior; keith day and digets (friend of snakey's).

A report did go in the Buckingham advertiser (now lost). Michael cook had a try disallowed by our referee of the day keith (tricky) watts.

Match fee's and sponsorship of nearly £200.00 went for a set of shirts for the fourth team. When you think beer was about 60 pence a pint then, we raised some valued money for the club.

A brace of pheasants was raffled off which kept being handed back until digets actually wanted them for his dinner! Vast quantities of beer then being consumed at the rugby club - mansells bitter.

In the evening a disco was organised at the community centre - £1380.00 taken on the door - £550.00 on bar.
