Burnley U16s vs Broughton Park U16s
Burnley U16s hosted Broughton Park in the final round of the Lancashire competition today, before the quarter finals kick in, knowing a win would mean they would top their group.
Having lost to the same opposition a few weeks ago by 3 points the boys knew they were in for a tough game.
However, this week all the Burnley lads were on song from the start. From some excellent kick chase BP were forced into an early knock on. The first scrum of the day was solid from the Burnley pack and from a wonderful show and go fly half Archie Brindle went in near the sticks, converting his own try.
From the restart Burnley went on the charge again, through Oscar Bradley. Again quick hands to the wing saw Burnley nearly in at the corner. Unfortunately it was not to be for Finlay and BP got a drop out under the posts.
However, not long after, from some excellent work in the forwards taking the game to BP, quick ball in the backs put Matthew into space on the wing and he went diving in at the opposite corner for a 12 to 0 lead.
Burnley weren't in any mood to take the foot off the gas today and from a further attack ended up with a scrum 5 metres out. A trademark Bradley pick and go saw him in, with Archie converting again.
Then came the play of the day, from the resulting kick off a well worked ruck led to quick ball for the backs. With the backs running a wonderful Park move, where centre Charlie K, put fullback Lucca into a gap he raced for the line, unfortunately falling agonisingly short of a score. It was great to see a training ground move create so much space though.
It wasn't long before Burnley crossed the whitewash again. This time well won ruck ball led to quick hands in the backs, hitting Tom F at outside centre, who burned his opposite number and went in for a trademark score.
So the blue and golds went in 26 to nil at halftime
As the second half began there was still more to come from Burnley with bursting runs by Jonah and Tom M, supported by Taylor M and Charlie W leading again to strong yards being made. From this todays players player, Mason Shaw burst onto a short pass from Charlie C and went over the line, taking 3 BP lads with him. Mason S was like a man possesed today. Making run after run around the ruck area and keeping Burnley on the front foot.
The boys continued their relentless pursuit of more tries and continued strong play led to a second try from Oscar Bradley, converted by Archie.
Finally, with the clock winding down Burnley won a penalty in a kickable position and Archie knocked this over, with the final score Burnley 40 to BP 0
The Burnley lads really stepped up today. From the coaches point of view it was pleasing to see they have taken on board the requirement to be relentless in defence at all times and this was rewarded by keeping a decent side from crossing the whitewash for the full 70 minutes.
This weeks players player went to Mason Shaw. His bursts around the ruck area were exceptional today.
Oppositions player went to Tom Marsden. Again he was everywhere today making breaks and winning lineouts.
Coaches award went to Finlay Carroll. He was also everywhere today making a nuisance of himself at the rucks and running good lines to take the ball forwards.
Next Sunday we have our Christmas get together. So Christmas jumpers and hats at the ready.
