Cup hopes live on

Burnley 3xv took centre stage last Saturday as the 1xv and 2xv took a break .The thirds were looking forward to only their second home game of the season to date coincidentally the opposition were the same Aspull 2xv.On Sept the 24th Burnley edged a thriller 23-22 and the anticipation was the game would be equally close with both sides boosted by players from their higher sides.Even better news for Burnley was Skipper Rob Bythell was away in Prague checking out the torture museum for more ideas for his post match revelries. This meant players came out from the wood work willing to play safe in the knowledge that their would be no "funnel of doom " or other obstacles to negotiate post match. That meant the acting Skipper Craig Wiseman had a surplus of riches with players like Mad Mick McGee back from his parallel running course and Lawrie Smith now fully adjusted to recently becoming a father adding considerable experience and skill to an already strong side.Aspull travelled with 17 plus a spectator drinking cans before the match who eventually went on in the second half and wasn't half a bad player plus another guy who arrived just before half time who was an excellent player. The game began on one of the best days of the year with the pitch in excellent condition .Burnley were dominant from the off and a new half back partnership was borne as Thabo Ntini discovered that standing on the wing for eighty minutes was much less pleasurable than playing scrum half particularly when you've a decent pack and Christian Allanson at no 8 to guide you through a game.Joe Parkinson played ten and made a pretty good fist of it.Jack Simmonite did a little shimy and dived over and Parky added the extras.Rob O Brien was excellent in the loose and the line out and through one of his steals, Jackson Linford who was outstanding fed Lee Rowlands who also had an excellent game to score. The reliable Parky added the kick and it looked ominous for the men from Aspull.Mick McGee impressed at fullback with his typical Patrick Sant Andre swashbuckling running from deep and linking up.Wez Hughes now in the front row but once a try machine for the 1xv on the wing was also having a strong game.Skipper Wiseman was ever alert to any opportunity pouncing on any stray ball.A penalty for a high tackle by the visitors gave Parky another opportunity and like the good soldier he was his shot was straight and true and Burnley went in 17-0 nil too the good in as good a half the thirds have played for many a season.Burnley rang a few changes at the half with ever reliable Krige having a breather and Smudge and Steve Kent joining the fray .Kent had in immediate impact with his strong running and driving making an immediate impact which meant he came in for some special treatment with a couple of sliding arms. All this pressure told as a mistake in Aspulls 22 led to Thabo strolling through to cap a great display by him.Burnley added another penalty shortly after to kill the game off. With the whistle blown after a breakdown an Aspull player carried on and tip tackled a Burnley player chaos ensued with ref Dai Mundy issuing two yellows one apiece to Burnley and Aspull and a red to the original tackler.Aspull restarted the game with a penalty after Burnleys retaliation .Shortly after Steve Harrison ghosted through a depleted Aspull defence with the kick being added Burnkey finished on 32.FT 32-0.A good performance against a strong and combative Aspull side who wil ask questions of everyone they play.Skipper Wiseman can now retire much like former England manager Sam Allardyce with a 100% record .Played won 1 won 1 though his side play a much better brand of rugby than Allardyces football side did.The good news is Biff is back next week and it's a home game a Lancashire derby against Bolton .It would be great to build on this performance their was some excellent rugby on show.Training is Tuesday & Thursdays @7pm at the club or if you can't make it try and go the gym for a run ..swim or a weight session just something to make you better than you were last week.
