A match too far

An undefeated Burnley under 14s side travelled to Garstang this Sunday, to play their second match in less than 24 hours.

With the absence of a couple of regular players following Saturday's match against Colne and Nelson, Burnley kicked off to Garstang.

From the off, one side displayed an abundance of Enthusiasm, Teamwork and Skill. Unfortunately this was not Burnley and as a result of some missed tackles the home side opened up the score in the corner. 5-0 to Garstang.

The Burnley lads again let Garstang push them into their own half and with the home team passing the ball well between themselves it was not long before Garstang scored their second in the same corner which again they were unable to convert. With tempers rising discipline started to waver and despite some great tackles from Bram Richmond and Seb Leonard, Garstang quickly ran in another two tries. Burnley rallied and pushed Garstang into their own half but once again the lack of effort in the rucks gave the ball back to Garstang who by now we're hungry for the win. A break down the wing saw Garstang run past the Burnley line and head towards to posts for a great try under the sticks which They converted. 27-0.

Burnley pushed back and some great running from Kai Jolly and Seb Leonard again pushed Garstang into their own 22. This time Burnley made no mistake and with every tackle drove nearer the try line. A ripped ball within five yards gave the ball back to Garstang but this time the Burnley defenders Bram Richmond and Seb Leonard pushed him into touch with yards of the Garstang try line. Luck simply wasn't on Burnleys side today and the half time whistle went at this crucial moment. Half time Garstang 27-0
The second half again saw Garstang test the Burnley defense leading to some serious loss of ground after a number of penalties for charging into the ruck, high tackles, not rolling away and failing to release the ball. It was only a matter of time before Garstang dove over for another two tries in quick succession under the posts which they managed to convert with ease. 41-0
With discipline now sailing away from the Burnley team, a card led to the team being a player down. Some heroic tackling by Seb Leonard kept the home team from scoring single handedly for short time, but a lapse in concentration led to an arm creeping up and another player in the bin. With two players down and despite some great tackling, notably from Dutton and Logan, Garstang once again gave Burnley a lesson in flowing rugby and again dove over in the corner for their final try.
A brave retaliation by the squad in the dying moments of the game saw Tom Bolton exploit a rare gap in the home teams defence to run a try in for the visitors. Once again luck was against the Burnley side and the conversion attempt bounced off the cross bar.
Garstang rallied and continued to test the weakened Burnley side but this time their wall stood firm, but was too little too late. Full time Garstang 46-Burnley 5.

Man of the match for the Burnley side was Leonard for a huge workload in attack and defence, unfortunately not echoed by the rest of the squad.

Although a heavy defeat, the match has given a lot for the coaches and players to work on, with the main development areas being fitness, discipline ... and rugby!
