U14s lay down Benchmark

Burnley U14's W Garstang U14's L

Burnley hosted Garstang in a friendly match knowing both clubs this season have done well in their respective groups of the Lancashire Waterfall, therefore a good game of rugby was on the cards. With it being half term both teams still had full squads and the match got underway.

The first half and it's becoming clear Burnley have some seriously quick lads playing and this was proved via their first three tries as Logan Cain scored two and Tom Wooller scored one, two converted by Charles Wilkes. Then the away team began pushing forward, Burnley defence was OK, stronger shoulders and less grabbing if we are being highly critical moving forward is needed, Garstang scored and converted. Burnley's fourth try came on back of a great rip and steal by Wilkes who went on a mazy run passed to Mason Ward who with power scored a converted try. On the board next was another of Burnley's gas men has Jack Orr from full back sprinted away and touched down. Next Louie Nutter showed his power, playing this match in the back row from his usual second row, was carrying well and one of these carries tackles fell off him and he scored this time converted by Jack Uttley. Burnley were still defending very well and probably were on their own line for 2 to 3 minutes before Garstang finally broke them down, try converted. The final two tries were scored by Cain, with one a great solo effort from his own twenty two, he showed great footwork control and ball transfer to beat players and then he was away, no catching him, one each converted by Wilkes and Uttley.

The second half, players were changed lads tried new positions as Matas Zalieckas had a run at centre and then ten, usually he's in the pack, Cameron Tregay played centre and wing, Blake Tonks made his usual solid tackles and support from back row and centre and Daniel Charlton came on for his third game with the club and scored two tries, one three quarter length of the pitch. Also Jacob Howell had his first full game at scrum half, rather than on the wing and his distribution from both sides was quick and kept the team moving forward giving Wilkes more room to distribute or dart himself from fly half. Top effort to Liam Jones even though still out injured was down supporting and running on with tee, also Troy Richmond who was slightly ill and injured so watched and sorted water and had this match to rest.

Other areas this team is growing in is their distribution, its not individuals making this team good its their collective appreciation to pass and support others in better positions than themselves. Work ons arriving at ruck let's do first before waiting for opposition to arrive had 2 rucks turned over Sunday, also great we are passing to others, let's make sure the pass is fully only. But that's just a picky coach all round great effort Sunday and move on to Aldwinians at Home next Sunday.

A big thank you also to Benchmark Build Ltd, who kindly sponsored Jackets for the subs 'finishers' to wear to keep warm and dry. Gary Dunn Company Owner with the team before the game.
