Deeside Rugby - Minis (P7)

GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome to Deeside Minis, Primary 7s. All are welcome (boys and girls) who are in Primary 7 in the school year 2020/21. We train most Saturdays 0930-1100hrs, at Woodend Playing Fields, Banchory, AB31 5QA. (opposite Tesco). Generally, we align with the school term, with breaks at October, Christmas, and Easter, but other than that, it’s most Saturday mornings until the end of May, plus the occasional tournament on a Sunday
In winter, bad conditions or frozen pitches may mean we have to cancel training. Please keep an eye on e-mail or Twitter (@DeesideMinis) for any last-minute updates.
The aim of Mini Rugby is to start developing a lifelong love of sport, through rugby. We encourage children to learn the basic skills of the game in a positive learning environment.

KIT
If you’re trying rugby for the first time, there’s no need to splurge on a full set of kit initially. Comfortable sports clothing (appropriate for the weather) and trainers are acceptable. However, as time goes on, we would recommend studded boots. For those who wish club-branded kit, you can buy rugby shirts / socks / training tops most Saturday mornings, from the club. In the kit store, there is a bucket of second-hand boots. Please feel free to help yourself – it operates on a system of one pair out, one pair in. In the first instance, if you don’t have a pair to put in, we ask that you make a donation at the tea hut instead.
The only piece of kit that is essential is a gum shield – these are inexpensive and can be purchased from most sports shops, or online.

COACHING
The main P7 coach this year is Gareth Jones (Gareth.DeesideRFC@gmail.com), who has been involved in coaching at Deeside since 2012. All Deeside Rugby coaches are PVG registered and have to have an up-to-date ‘Rugby Right’ certification from Scottish Rugby. Many, including Gareth, are trained to UKCC level 1, with some coaches in the more senior teams up to UKCC level 3 or 4.
All coaches have basic training in child welfare. We work hard to keep all the children safe, but First Aiders are on hand, should the need arise. The club also has a dedicated Child Protection Officer.

REGISTRATION
If you’re new to the club, feel free to come along for a few weeks and give it a try. However, if you do decide to join, players need to register with the club (and parents can join as non-playing members). Registrations forms, and payment, is via the Deeside Rugby website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/deesiderfc. Fees for 2019/20 are unchanged from the last few years, at £85 for the year. The fee goes towards running the club facilities, including rental of the playing fields. It also covers appropriate insurance for all players and therefore players will not be allowed to participate in any tournaments until registration is complete.
New players (those playing at P4 or above, for the first time) also need to be registered with SCRUMS, Scottish Rugby’s online system. Information is available from:
https://tinyurl.com/SCRUMS-letter
https://tinyurl.com/SCRUMS-guide
If you have previously registered with SCRUMS, at Deeside Rugby, this should roll over automatically and you should not need to re-register.

COVID-19
The coronavirus pandemic halted all rugby in Scotland from March 2020. Deeside Rugby is following the guidelines from Scottish Rugby (available at: www.scottishrugby.org/clubs-and-schools/return-to-rugby) to allow training to restart. However, rugby is a contact sport and, at the time of writing, various parts of the P7 game are still not allowed – tackling, rugby, the scrum, etc. We will reintroduce these to the training sessions as soon as it is thought safe to do so.

We try to avoid last-minute changes to training. However, sometimes this is unavoidable. If you’re on Twitter, please follow @DeesideMinis. Even if you’re not on Twitter, it’s worth a quick check of the website on Saturday mornings, just to check that we haven’t had to change or cancel for any reason (https://twitter.com/DeesideMinis). This is particular important over the Winter – we cannot play on frozen pitches!
