Foggy Morning but good result for Harrow

A Foggy Sunday morning greeted us in Watford, as we headed to Fullarians RFC for our first friendly match of the season.

This was great opportunity for the boys who don’t get regular game time to prove their skills & play as a team, against a well organised Fullarians team.

We started fast & were looking to move the ball wide and put our wingers into space to use our pace & score some points. We seemed to pass the ball down the line well, but never seemed to go forward?

Our forward pack, with many debutants competed well at the break downs, showing good rucking skills (when we weren't walking) and the Fullers coach complimented the team on this. From this quick ball, some of our strong runners in the forwards took their opportunities as the opposition got sucked in, we attacked around the fringes running straight & more direct which resulted in 2 quick tries. After 15 mins, we seemed to stop competing, lost focus, structure & defensive line speed and the Fullarian boys came back strong, scoring 2 tries of their own.

After, a chat & refocus at half time, we started fast again. What was pleasing is that we raised the bar & the defensive line speed & organisation from the centres & wingers improved & this pressure suffocated the opponents space to play & was crucial in stopping another Fullarian revival. Add to this a good kicking game, that was also commented on by the Fullarian coaches. This either helped release pressure or allow us to contest possession in the resulting lineout or ruck. Our newly formed PACK, scrummaged well and were competitive against a Fullarian pack, who play together every week & are unbeaten in the league - Played 2, won 2.

An excellent 2nd half, that saw us dominate territory & possession, we scored a further 4 tries, with the final score below, well done:

Fullarians RFC 12 - 40 Harrow RFC

Tries : Aaron 4, Shore 1, Luke Seagon 1, 4 conversions - Luke Seagon.

There were a couple of excellent examples, of great go forward & support, where the boys were running at speed, showing agility & off-loading the ball to get across the gain/tackle line. Freddie Rice, made one such run where he made a powerful run & off loaded to Aaron who was following & supporting his team mate & scored, finishing off a great move. Another example was Leonardo’s pop pass off the ground, a difficult skill to control the ball & one that we’ve been practicing. It was executed to perfection, which changed the point of attack & saw the team go forward & once again get over the gain line which put the defensive team under huge pressure.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the players who turned up & played, It was a great morning of Rugby & both sets of boys showed great determination, skills & fantastic effort and played the game in the right spirit. There were many positives from the day & number of things to work on to improve further.

Thanks to Jo for arranging all to be in attendance & for Fullarians RFC for being great hosts.

Please remember Rugby's core values - Respect, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Enjoyment, Teamwork
