Damn, London got cold. Sometime between hiding inside for Christmas and planning January resolutions that were never going to last more than a fortnight, I missed the bit where it’s important to bring a jacket to a rugby game.
The match against Gravesend RFC kicked off to sideways rain and blistering wind, and an early injury meant a substitution for forward Mikey Rowlands, who was replaced by Alistair O’Brien.
The first half saw a strong attack from Gravesend, leading with two tries. The second half saw the Steelers turn things around, including some incredible breaks in the backs from Jonathan Cook and a spectacular first try from newcomer Robbie Brennan.
It’s also heartening to see such a large amount of players stepping up from the development squad to join the 2nds. Definitely a group to keep an eye on.
Man of the match was split between Marc Landon and Jonathan Cook. Special mention goes to Marc for securing one a bold black eye in the first half and continuing to dominate as a forward throughout the rest of the match. It has certainly given him a gorgeous Sophia Loren smoky-eye look. Glorious.
Final score was 10 - 17 to Gravesend RFC, a fantastic result considering our last match against them was a runaway defeat.
Our only remaining new year’s resolution? More rugby.
