Seconds Flatter to Deceive
For his second season in charge, 2nd XI manager Kelvin George continued his work with much of the 'liquorice allsorts' squad that he managed to patch together the previous season - as is the norm for Lawrenny II managers. Low on numbers at times, a 30 year age gap between the youngest and oldest players, and an even bigger range in footballing ability, an anticipated season of struggle threatened to turn into an unlikely promotion push, until a slump in form after the enforced mid-season break saw the dream shattered.
A return of twenty points from the first 10 games prior to the rain induced two and a half month break, meant that the unthinkable was well and truely on. With newly installed captain Matt Kidney roaming in midfield alongside the combative Rhys Jenkins, backed up by the returning physical presence of Liam Woodford and the youthful energy of new signing Kieron Johnson, Lawrenny posed a threat to teams when they came forward.
With Harry Thomas in lethal form in front of goal, the youth of Ryan Morton, the ever improving Richard Ledwood between the sticks, playing behind veteran Peter Horsley at centre half, alongside cameos from the manager and the returning Jonathan Cole, the side dug in despite a difficult run-in to complete the disjointed season in mid-table in a truncated 5th Division.
