...afternoon at Shaft Road with both teams at home. The Sun was shining, car park rammed and the pitch was looking spectacular.
Oldfield opened the day with Ali Lane sniping from the back of a ruck a couple of metres out under the post to covert and made it 7-0 in 5 minutes.
The defence was strong and a tackle from Bertie Kennedy won a turn over to kick from the corner. Oldfield secured the ball for a driving line out, which was a great drive leading to a penalty try, 14-0 up 10 minutes down.
James Ambler, on his debut, had a fantastic game showing his skills. James broke the line, which chipped the ball over to Callum Abson to which he scored his first try for the club in style. Ali lane converted to make it 21-0.
After 30 minutes unfortunately, Rhys Redman and Dave McHugh went for a tackle, which ended up in them hitting each other, needing a double front row replacement and some questionable taping skills.
Jamie Miller, also on his debut and build up to captain the Army vs Navy game, was gracing Oldfield with his presence. Jamie cut an unbelievable line after an attacking line out , 15 metres out to claim the bonus point score.
Halftime 28-0.
ST Bernadettes started the second half well, scoring 7 minutes into the second half by some slightly weaker defence than the Red Army would have expected at 28-5.
St Bernadettes continued the barrage of attacks and finding holes, creating the score 28-10.
Another debutant, Josh James playing outside centre, was showing some quick feet by making a break through the outside channel and scoring under the posts, for what was another fantastic debut the club. Oldfield are excited to see what Josh can do in the future 33-10.
After Oldfield had suffered a few injuries, head coach Ollie Hayes had to come on the field and fill in the backs, however after some wonderful back moves and fast hands, Ollie set Sam Dron up to score under the post yet again, to bring the score 40 – 10.
The return of Rhys Redman, after some questionable taping to his head, meant he could come back on and work well alongside Ali with some one twos up the line falling slightly short, however a well serviced breakdown by Rickie Gibson and Sam Cooke gave an opportunity for Jamie Miller to show off his running skills yet again. 47-10.
In the final play of the game, to bring the final score to 54-10, was Ollie Hayes running the ball end from the halfway line to finish off an absolute cracker of an afternoon for Oldfield.
