North Gloucestershire Division 1 2017/2018
Following a triumphant season in Division One, we catch up with first team manager Nick Vaughan to reflect on Redmarley FC's title winning season and promotion to the North Gloucestershire Premier Division.
Q: What do you think has been the key to Redmarley's success this season?
A: Holding the core of the squad from last season together and building on their team spirit.
Q: Do you think this league triumph will help the players mentally now in the cup competitions?
A: My job next season is to get the players to believe in their abilities and play to their full potential, I think this year’s success will help that.
Q: Is there anything you would have done differently, looking back over the last 12 months?
A: I tried a tougher approach in the changing room in the run up to the Milkwall away match. It was supposed to fire the players up but instead it did the opposite.
Q: What was your highlight of the season?
A: The game against Worrall Hill. Holding them to a draw in their own backyard was a great performance.
Q: What was your low point of the season?
A: Milkwall away. The team seemed to buckle and we were lucky to get away from that game with a draw.
Q: Can you think of one moment, on or off the pitch, which has made you particularly proud to manage the team?
A: The Worrall Hill match hands down! Every single one of my players stood proud in that game and came from behind twice to earn a valuable point, but more importantly snatch two points away from them. That day I realised I was managing a men's team.
Q: What are you most looking forward to working on next season?
A: I personally don't think that we have reached our full potential yet. If you couple that with the addition of a reserves team, I think we can work on making Redmarley one of the biggest clubs in the Forest of Dean.
Q: Are there any players that you feel we still haven't seen the best of yet?
A: Yes, many! There are some players who have been at the club a long time who haven't had the opportunity to show what they've got. Now with a second team and a second manager we can work together to develop these players.
Q: What are your plans for preseason?
A: Fitness first and then positioning and formation. I think what's key is to get players in their best position so they can have the best influence on the team but also where they can enjoy their football. If we can I'd like to work on specific set plays too as I don't feel we made the most of our opportunities from dead ball situations this year.
Q: What are your targets for next season?
A: The first team have had a taste of success, and now they're hungry for more! They're ambitious and want to push for the Premier Division title. Personally I'd love to unite everyone at the club. From the youngest player to the oldest and this will only strengthen the Redmarley family. I'm also looking forward to working with Allan and helping him to achieve success with the reserves team. Onwards and upwards! Marley Army!
