COACHES' COMMENT
Andy Greaves:
As a coach of a young group of players I was delighted that all the hard work the boys had put into training on Sunday mornings and Thursday nights had paid off - this was one of the best performances we have ever displayed. The players have set themselves a high standard which they now have to keep up. Boys, you made Dave and I very proud on Sunday morning.
VIEW FROM THE TOUCHLINE
Simon Bebbington:
Sheffield showed their mettle to beat Doncaster. The team played well together, despite not having had a game for more than a month, nor a full training session for a fortnight.
In attack Sheffield were mostly quick to provide support for their player making the break, and all passed well.
Tries came from opportunist pick ups from the base of the scrum or when ball popped out in the loose, from probing solo runs from the centre of the back line, and a text-book forward rush from close to the try line.
Spencer deservedly won the man-of-the-match award of his skill and determination, but it is worth noting that the efforts of his team-mates helped him a number of times. As the match report shows, Spencer picked up the ball from a number of scrums won against-the-ahead and rucks, and then did his scrum-half job perfectly - went for the line and didn't give up until he had crossed it.
In defence Sheffield refused to give Doncaster room to develop moves, leaving the home side with only two tactics - give the ball to the jinky runner, or give it to the big kid. Doncaster had several potential attacks stopped before they had even started, thanks to the Sheffield pack winning several scrums against the head.
Kai Chung:
Runs: Charlie, Chris, Harry, Spencer – all nearly scored after running the full length of the pitch
Support: Whole team were great, but again I noticed Charlie and Chris run the whole length of the pitch to support Spencer when Spencer scored his final try. The great thing here is that if anyone had tackled Spencer, he would have had 2 options open to him!
