Sheffield demolish Wharfedale after the weather break and the slip up at York to get their Championship ambitions back on the road.

18th February 2012

Sheffield (2) 127 - 0 Wharfedale (3)

Chris 'The Viking' Stanney Reports

Sheffield suffered a stutter to their promotion chances a just over a month ago; however, successive wins and the 60-0 demolition of Selby have put them back into the ascendency. An enforced two week break caused by the weather came at a delicate moment for the blue and whites. With this in mind, the Wharfedale game could not be taken lightly, a team who have struggled this season, but are in possession of a formidable pack.

From the kick off, Sheffield struggled to settle into the scrum with their usual vigour, some slack tackling and lack of enforcement at the rucks and mauls were giving Wharfedale the confidence to use their patented pick and drive to create some pressure. It was however, a Sheffield pick and drive that opened the field a little and allowed us to shift the ball to our backline. Marshalled by a returning Ryan Amos, it was they who were to open the point scoring and dominate the first half. Slowly Wharfedale began to falter as Sheffield started to press and create openings in the field to be exploited with fantastic execution by the backs. These plays and linking successfully with the forwards, who were now operating at pace, Wharfedale fell to pieces. The halftime score stood at 71-0.

Sheffield used their full compliment of substitutes and with it came a change in play. The scrums tightened up and the forwards committed to each ruck and maul with the ruthless efficiency that has been present all season. With the set pieces secure and Roger wood and Rob Holland dictating the play, Sheffield began to dominate the game without any notable response. Wharfedale attempted to change tactics and salvage something, however, the decision to drop it down the throat of our backline proved to be a step in the wrong direction. Through some precision passing and the speed of Thomas Metcalf, the ball was run in with ease. It would appear the Wharfedale number 10 wanted to re-examine his theory, this was greeted with the same result, and two tries in as many minutes.

Wharfedale, now bereft of ideas did not have a response for anything in front of them. Points were coming from all quarters of the pitch and each position was well represented on the scoreboard. The backs used their speed and passing play to expose the Wharfedale line. The forwards now operating with their familiar aggressive play, powered through breaking tackle after tackle. Domination at the scrum and lineout in the top corner resulted in a great 8 man effort to drive over the line and Give Roger Wood his second of the day.

The game finished, Sheffield 127-0 Wharfedale.
