Memorable Presidents Day

By

Presidents Day at Oldfield Old Boys Rugby Club saw the First XV come out deserved winners against a strong Yatton RFC side.

Watched by a large crowd with so many past players and supporters present on a beautiful spring day the visitors blasted out of the blocks and threw hammer and tongs at a spirited home side.

Oldfield’s resolute defence held firm and in the 9th minute, they broke out of their own 22 spun the ball wide to Jordan Ainslie who pressed the after burners to sprint over for the opening try, brilliantly converted by Outside Half Tom Pittman.

The visitors continued to press and were awarded a slightly dubious try on 26 minutes after a maul. Oldfield were determined to put on a display in their last home match of the season and continued to play their expansive game.

On the half hour replacement prop Dave McHugh crashed over for the second try again converted by Pittman.

Half Time 14-5

In the first minute of the second half the visitors crossed for their second try, which was converted. This gave them some momentum and saw Oldfield start to fall foul of the referee with their indiscipline and in the 50th minute to everyone’s amazement, including the visitors, the referee awarded them a Penalty Try.

To their immense credit Oldfield stoutly refused to be put off and struck back straight from the restart with a try from Center Charlie Noad, unconverted.

Oldfield were now playing some excellent rugby and had their visitors on the ropes. In three superb minutes of beautiful rugby they scored three more tries from full back Chris Erickson, wing Conrad Braithwaite and their final try by the impressive Noad, the last being converted by Pittman.

To their credit the Yatton heads never went down and they scored their bonus point try in the 79th minute, which was converted to make it a final score of 36-24.

Impressively Oldfield’s 2nds made it a double with a sizeable 75-0 win against their Yatton counterparts rounding off a memorable day.
