Eagles Confirm Taylor Signing

James Smiles3 Jun - 18:00

Please welcome Greg Taylor to the Eyrie.

Bedford Town Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Greg Taylor. Greg is a 35 year old, who has a wealth of experience across the National League and EFL. He can play in central defence, defensive midfield or central midfield.

Greg is a local lad, having been born in Bedford. He spent his youth career with Northampton Town, making his first team debut at then Premier League Bolton in a 2-1 league cup victory in 2008. After departing Sixfields, he signed for Kettering Town in the Conference Premier, before switching to fellow Conference Premier side Darlington in the winter of 2011.

Taylor moved back closer to home, and joined Luton Town in the Conference Premier. He played 18 games in the 2011/12 season, including scoring against former club Kettering Town. He featured in the Hatters memorable FA Cup win at Norwich City, knocking out the Premier League side, before moving on to spells at Tamworth and Mansfield. At Mansfield, he was a key part in their playoff success and return to the Football League.

After departing Mansfield, Taylor went on to join Cambridge United. Once more, Taylor had an extremely successful season, winning promotion back to the Football League and winning the FA Trophy. This success saw him remain at the Abbey Stadium for a further four years, playing in Cambridge's FA Cup games home and away against Manchester United. He was made club captain, and having passed 250 appearances for the U's, secured promotion to League One in 2021/22, playing every game that season.

Taylor was released by Cambridge at the end of the 2022/23 season after ten years with the club. He departed the club having made 373 appearances, the tenth highest in the club's history.

Since leaving Cambridge, Greg has been with Woking in the National League and last season Kings Lynn Town in the National League North. He arrives at the Eyrie having made over 470 appearances in the EFL and National League combined.

Everyone at the Eyrie is delighted that Greg now has returned back to represent his home town club, and look forward to him being an experienced member of our National League North squad. Greg has signed a one year contract with the club, which will see him remain at the Eyrie until the summer of 2026.

Speaking to the club's official website, manager Lee Bircham commented "Goes without saying I am delighted to get Greg done & dusted.

From the very first meeting we had I felt Greg wanted to get stuck in with us as much as we wanted to get him over the line. It was really refreshing and easy.

Absolutely no hiding from it, Greg is a massive signing for us. One that I’m sure will surprise a few. His career to date has been nothing short of exceptional and also has the vital National League North experience that we’ll need from the last two seasons, playing nearly 50 times in helping King's Lynn reach the playoff semi finals.

It's an added bonus for Eagles that Greg is from Bedford, and lives in Bedford, so it just gives it that extra special feel to him signing for the club. On top of that, he is a lovely fella and will be huge for the tight changing room we already have.

Welcome to the Eyrie, Greg"

You can see Greg in action through pre-season, which starts at St Neots Town on Saturday 12th July.
