Michael Charles Mitchell worked for The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society at Head Office, Norwich. He entered company service in September 1938 in the Investment Department. He was a member of the Territorials and was called up on the outbreak of war. He was initially reported missing after the fall of Singapore. His date of death is given as 26 January 1942, he was 21. His rank and unit are given as Lieutenant, Norfolk Regiment, 6th Battalion. According to his obituary in the staff magazine.

" His love of sport, and frank and fearless character, endeared him to all his colleagues and his loss will be deeply felt by the many friends he made... He was considered a most efficient officer, and was held in affectionate regard by his brother officers and men. His battalion took part in the fighting in Malaya and he was fatally wounded in the neighbourhood of Regan some 30 miles north of Jahore...Yet another promising young life has been given in the cause of freedom”
